How can We Help

Pain Management

Pain is usually a symptoms associated with musculoskeletal (having to do with muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, joints, and cartilage) conditions (link to list of conditions).  The presence of pain may result in loss of range of motion (ROM), decreased muscle performance, decreased sensory discrimination and oedema leading to impairments and functional limitations.

Interventions to reduce pain are based on reducing inflammatory response in the healing tissue and also interventions to restore function.  It can be resting in splint, avoiding certain motion.  It can be application of physical agents / modalities to facilitate healing and/or control oedema.  Mostly used with other interventions such a therapeutic exercise and patient education.  Electrical stimulation can also be employed for pain modulation.

Patient education include graded therapeutic exercises, rest and avoid aggravating activities, modification of activities of daily living (ADLs), joint protection techniques, energy conservation techniques,  ergonomic positioning and postural awareness.
